Automated Paste Milling System

Disclosed is the automation of a three-roll milling operation for use in the manufacture of thick film paste.

Commercially available milling systems are equipped with manually operated electro-mechanical and hydraulic control devices. Automated process data collection on three-roll milling systems is not offered.

The automated three-roll milling system is a standard Buhler* Three Roll Mill with an external water chiller retrofitted with sensing devices which continuously evaluate the following parameters: motors ON, hydraulic pressure (left and right side), product level, cooling water temperature, and cooling water flow rate.

Control devices installed in the system allow automated operation of the following parameters: starting of the system drives, setting of water temperature set point, and shutting down of system drives.

The control system connected to the listed sensing and control devices consists of an electrical enclosure housing, an IBM 5531 Industrial PC, a Square D Sy Max** PLC tool controller, multiple sensor converting and display modules, a bar code reader, an uninterruptible power supply, relay controls and wiring.

Ladder logic programming of the Square D tool controllers and LATTICE C*** programming of the IBM PC allow the following features to be achieved:
Automatic setting of all process parameters (except pressure) for the specific paste type which has been received from the previous operation.
