A method is described which enables contextual data searching of all the documents within a folder for a specified level of nesting. A folder of information can be thought of as a collection of information similar to a folder in a filing cabinet.

In accordance with the new method, a protocol is provided for a set of applications to allow the applications to request and perform the extraction of data from all of the documents in a folder through the specified level of nesting as follows:

The library request application builds an extract request that includes the following information:

A reference to the folder document. The EXTRACT command includes an IDENTIFIED-DATA operand with a unique pointer to the folder document in the library.

An indicator specifying that the extract request is for a specified level of nesting for the folder. The EXTRACT command includes a FOLDER- DOCUMENT-OPTION operand that indicates the level of nesting.

The name of the extract program or procedure. The EXTRACT command includes a PROCESS operand that is used to specify the extract procedure to be invoked. The parameters and options of the extract program or procedure. The EXTRACT command includes a PROCESS-PARAMETERS operand that is used to specify the extract procedure parameters and options.
