Distribution of Documents in a Folder With the Documents in a Specified Order

A method is described for distributing a folder to a recipient with the documents in a specific order within the folder. This order can be arbitrarily specified by the requestor or a system default will be used. The recipient of the folder will see the documents in the folder in the order in which the requestor sent them.

A data object associated with the folder includes the ordering criteria. The ordering fields for this data object are set by the creator of the folder. The documents within the folder can be ordered explicitly by position or ordered by any combination of descriptors.

The requester application sends an appropriate REQUEST-DISTRIBUTION command. This command includes pointers to the documents to be distributed. If the document is in the library, the pointer is a unique library identifier. If the document is sent with the request, the pointer is a pointer to the data area within the REQUEST-DISTRIBUTION command that contains the physical copy of the document and its associated data areas. The IDENTIFIED-DATA operand contains the pointer to the document. Each IDENTIFIED-DATA operand includes a unique identifier (DID) within the scope of this REQUEST- DISTRIBUTE command.

If all or part of a folder from the library is to be distributed, then FOLDER- DOCUMENT-OPTION operand is specified to indicate how much of the folder is to be distributed. The value for this operand could be just the folder itself, the entire folder or the folder through the specified level of nesting. Alternatively, a document can be specified as being in the folder to be distributed by setting a reference field (RID) in the document's IDENTIFIED-DATA operand so that the RID for the document is set to the DID for the folder.

The ordering criteria is always in a data area associated with the f...
