A method is described for changing a descriptor or set of descriptors for all documents within a folder. A folder of information can be thought of as a collection of information similar to a folder in a filing cabinet. It is important to be able to change a particular descriptor that applies to a set of documents within a folder.

This method provides the user with a protocol for an application to modify a descriptor or set of descriptors for all of the dependent documents contained within a folder. Each document has a descriptor data area associated with it which is called the Interchange Document Profile. The descriptors comprise fields, such as author, subject, date filed, creation date and keywords. Some of the descriptor fields are originally set and maintained by the owner of the folder, while others are maintained by the library server and others by the document's editor.

A requestor with modify authority can change user-assigned descriptors. A requestor can also make a global change to a set of descriptors for an entire folder. The requestor application builds a modify command that includes the changes to the descriptor(s) in the MODIFY-DATA operand, the folder to be modified in the IDENTIFIED-DATA operand and the level of nesting for the modify with the FOLDER-DOCUMENT-OPTION operand.
