Accurate Axis Coupler for Rotary Actuator Control

Disclosed is an axis-coupling device for fast and accurate control of a rotary actuator in a disk file system with an external rotary sensor.

An external rotary sensor (encoder) is applied to a head positioner on the manufacturing line of a magnetic disk system which has a rotary actuator. The sensor is fixed to an actuator pivot shaft through an axis coupler, and detects the rotary angle of the actuator which is driven by a Voice Coil Motor (VCM) as shown in Fig. 1. Here, the requirements to the axis coupler are high resonant frequency, controlled low vertical force, very low horizontal force, and fine axis alignment for accurate position sense without interference of mechanical force.

The coupling system is shown in Fig. 2. An elevator lifts up the coupling device to the stopper height. Then, a floated stage horizontally moves free. There is a tapered joint on the top of a coupler cylinder. The joint follows the VCM axis, and the floated stage makes self alignment between the VCM axis and that of encoder. The coupler cylinder slides on a V-groove of the encoder axis with a ball bearing. The vertical coupling force is kept constant according to tension of a coil spring and the stopper height.
