Disclosed are the extensions to the IBM Personal Printer ASCII Page Presentation Media (PPM) command 1,2 providing support for paper size and copy number selection.

The PPM command is used by the printer to select:

THE PAPER FEED TECHNIQUE the forms control

the paper source

the paper size

the number of copies

Each paper size is identified by a Paper Size ID. The Paper Size ID is an unsigned byte which is the 4th data parameter of the PPM command. This ID is also used by the printer to prompt for paper installation or to select paper using the printer control panel. The Paper Size IDs are grouped by paper and envelope sizes. The existing paper feed technique and forms control parameters are used to identify the type of form (paper or envelope). A Paper Size ID value of zero indicates that the printer POR default size for the active paper source is to be used. If the correct size of paper is not installed, then an operator intervention condition is initiated requesting the installation of the correct paper size.

The number of copies is an unsigned byte which specifies the number of copies of each page to be printed. This parameter is the 5th byte of the PPM command. A value of zero indicates that the previous number of copies is to be used.
