Abstract

It is often difficult to move small objects, such as probes or their holders, in environments where manual intervention is generally excluded for reasons of space or ambient conditions, such as vacuum, for example. In what follows, we describe a simple fastener mountable to a manipulator and that allows secure attachment to the object to be moved. This fastener provides, also, for a reliable electrical contact to the object.

Pin Fastener for Manipulators

It is often difficult to move small objects, such as probes or their holders, in environments where manual intervention is generally excluded for reasons of space or ambient conditions, such as vacuum, for example. In what follows, we describe a simple fastener mountable to a manipulator and that allows secure attachment to the object to be moved. This fastener provides, also, for a reliable electrical contact to the object.

The fastener, respectively shown in the figures in cross-section and in perspective, comprises a cylindrical pin 1 having a pair of parallel plane surfaces 2, 3 machined from the cylindrical portion of pin 1. A hole 4 extends between the plane surfaces 2, 3 and receives a freely movable spring wire 5 having the shape of a slightly opened U.

The object 6 to be moved is provided with a bore 7 of a diameter slightly larger than that of the pin 1. Insertion of pin 1 into bore 7 will cause the free ends of spring wire 5 to resiliently engage the wall of bore 7, thus securing pin 1 to object 6 and at the same time establishing electrical contact between them.
