Heat-Resistant Plastic Tray for Flat Packages

This article describes a heat-resistant plastic tray which can be used not only as a tray for carrying or shipping flat circuit module packages but also as a tray for baking the packages in an oven.

In the figures, the tray 1 is made of a heat-resistant resin, such as polycarbonate, by injection-molding. The tray 1 has pockets or recessed islands 2 in which plastic flat packages 5 with leads 6 are seated as shown in Fig. 3, which is a cross-sectional view taken along line A-A in Fig. 2. Four elongated slots 3 are formed along the sides of each of the islands 2 such that each island 2 is connected to the tray body at the four corners 4. The slots 3 and the islands 2 are formed to enable the packages 5 to be loaded into or unloaded from the pockets without causing damage to the leads 6 by contact with the tray.

The slots 3 act to relieve stress which is caused by injection- molding to warp the tray, and permit a low cost, heat-resistant injection-molding to warp the tray, and permit a low-cost, heat-resistant plastic to be used for the tray. In the manufacture of plastic flat packages, it is required to bake the packages before vapor phase soldering to minimize package cracks. However, low-cost, heat- resistant plastics, such as polycarbonate, are apt to cause a warp to the tray and could not be used satisfactorily. Since the present tray does not cause a warp, it can be used not only as a carry tray but...
