A non-magnetic ceramic of partially stabilized zirconia and titania provides a non-magnetic ceramic with wear properties similar to that of nickel-zinc ferrite. The non-magnetic ceramic is superior in toughness, friction and strength.

Several head designs, especially magnetic tape heads, require non-magnetic materials with wear characteristics similar to that of the magnetic ferrite. The non-magnetic ceramic must have high strength and toughness plus a low coefficient of friction. Barium-titanium ceramic is generally used but has been found to be deficient in several aspects.

Zirconia has several crystalline structures. The standard structure is monoclinic. A stabilized structure is cubic and a partially stabilized zirconia has a tetragonal structure. An unusual property of this material, when in its partially stabilized tetragonal state, is its high toughness when subjected to high stress. The material also has a high strength and a very low coefficient of friction. The characteristics of this ceramic can be explained by the transformation from the tetragonal structure to the monoclinic structure. Titania has been found to wear equal to that of the magnetic ferrite, but by itself is weak and brittle.

By incorporating a titania-zirconia mixture, a good non-magnetic ceramic has been obtained, especially when bonded to the magnetic ceramic in the formation of a magnetic tape head. A ceramic containing 85 weight percent...
