Abstract

This interface allows an uninterruptable power source (UPS) device and/or a battery backup unit to be attached to an operating system which provides either all or some of the signals. With the use of this interface, the operating system can provide the user with the necessary information in event of a power outage. The UPS interface being referenced herein is a Contact Closure Type.

This simple, low-cost interface allows flexibility so that the customer can use a commercially available UPS device by connecting the 4 signals (the UPS signals in Fig. 2) for the interface to be operational. These signals are commonly available on most of the commercially available UPS devices. It can easily be adapted to interface with any UPS device providing all or some of the standard functions. This interface is very easy to implement compared to the standard RS232 which is available on most of the UPS devices.

It makes it possible to connect more than one UPS into a network servicing a system by connecting the four signals from each UPS in parallel before they are connected to the control panel. Only UPS powered on will be sufficient to activate the UPS On line (see Fig. 2). It also allows the use of both the UPS and the battery backup features concurrently. On the other hand, it allows the use of UPS without having a battery backup feature or the use of battery backup without having a UPS device connected.

The operating system will not have to poll these signals. The monitoring of the signals and deglitching will be performed by the control panel. The control panel will provide the operating system with the T1 and T2 Battery Low signal information (see Fig. 2). This will help in determining as to which of the batteries (UPS, Tower 1 or the Tower 2) (see Fig. 1) needs to be serviced. The Battery Low signals from the power supply indicates if either/both T1 or T2 battery voltages are below the predetermined threshold. If batteries are not used, then only the UPS signals are used.

The interface allows the flexibility to use the four UPS signals for a battery backup in addition to having a UPS, by connecting the Battery Active and the Battery Low signals of the battery backup to the UPS Utility Failure and the UPS Battery Low signals.

The Control Panel has a 4-wire (the UPS signals in Fig. 2) interface to contact closure type UPS/Battery backup units to get information on the status of the UPS/Battery backup units.

If the status of the UPS/Battery backup units is requested by the Operating system, the last information obtained when the polling occurred will be included in a return Status message.

If the UPS/Battery backup signals change states, a Status message will be initiated to the Operating system.
