Abstract

Disclosed is a color filter for liquid crystal displays. When a color pixel for color display is composed of red/green/blue/white dots, one color pixel can display 16 colors by combinations of on and off of each color dot. Spectral transmittance of white dots is a very significant factor because it has direct effects upon the color property of 8 colors which include the white dot. When the opening rate is about 50%, optimum optical density of the white dot seems to be in the range of 0.3-0.5; however, the optimum color property of the white dot cannot be defined by only the optical density because there are innumerable spectra of white dots which satisfy the condition.

Spectral transmittance of the white dot is defined to satisfy the condition which enables the color temperature of the white dot to be equal to that of white color which is composed of red, green and blue dots. As a result of this control, the color temperature of white color composed of red, green, blue and white dots is equal to that of white color composed of red, green and blue dots. Then, three kinds of white color comprising the White dot, Red+Green+Blue dots, Red+GreenBlue+White dots, respectively, have the same color temperature and different luminance.
