Flexband Pick and Place Device

This article describes a device to pick a flexband from a staging fixture and place it on a pallet located on a conveyor line.

Referring to the drawings, Fig. 1 shows the flexband. Fig. 2 shows the start position for the pick and place device disclosed herein. Fig. 3 is a view in the direction of A-A in Fig. 2. Figs. 4A and 4B show the open and closed positions of the pick head clamps, respectively.

The device consists of the following:

A. Ribbon channel pick head clamps (five).

B. Flat locating pad pick head clamp.

C. Pick head clamp for "B" tenon.

D. Pick head clamp for "A" tenon.

E. Staging fixture.

F. Pick head arm attached to multimotion air cylinder

"H".

G. Shot pin for accurate registration of pick head

assembly

for two positions, one over staging fixture and

one over

flexband pallet assembly.

H. Multimotion rotary air actuator.

J. Mounting plate for eight pick head clamps.

The pick and place device start position is 90 degrees away from the staging fixture E and positioned over the flexband pallet assembly (not shown) which is located on the conveyor line. This leaves the staging fixture opened to receive the next flexband.

The flexband is delivered to the staging fixture by a robot that picks the flexband from a storage tray assembly (not shown). It then is expanded to the configuration as shown in Fig. 1. The pick and place device is rotated from the pallet position 90 degrees over the stagi...
