Log Calling Numbers/Names

Disclosed is a method for a telephony application to read and save the calling names and numbers of incoming phone calls to the ROLMphone* 244PC.

Typical personal computer (PC) telephony applications mainly provide a stored phone list and a way to automatically dial from that phone list. However, with the ROLMphone 244PC product, applications can provide more useful features.

The algorithm described below will describe how to detect an incoming call and how to extract the calling name or number so that they can be listed on a PC screen or stored on disk. The date and time of the call can be obtained and stored as well, so when users return to their desk, they will have have a list showing all received calls and the time and date of each call.

When a new call comes in, the application can determine that the phone is ringing with the Number of Lines (NL) command. When the application detects the Ring, it can then get the calling name and number (or incoming trunk number for external calls) with the Display Information (DI) command. The time and date can be obtained from the PC real time clock. When Automatic Number Identification (ANI) is available, calling numbers for external calls will also be determined. Using this method, names that correspond to ANI can be obtained from a data base in the PC.

Once all the information related to the incoming call is gathered, the application can display it on the screen or store it in a file. *Tradema...
