Retractable Pressure Foot for Matrix Drilling

Disclosed is a device that is used in a matrix drilling machine that is a board top reference back up. It also retracts, if needed, to clear board tooling and locators.

During a normal drilling cycle, air 7 (Fig. 1) would be applied to the top of the pressure foot cylinder 15, keeping it in the downward position 10 (hidden). An X- Y table would move the board stack 11 to the correct drilling position. The anvil plate and elastic anvil buttons 12 are actuated upwards, clamping the boards together (this eliminates chips between layers of boards and minimizes burrs). The force exerted by pressure on the upper part of the pressure foot piston 14 is much greater than that at each anvil button; therefore, the anvil plate is stalled by the pressure foot cylinder force.

Since this machine has the capability to hold many different sizes of panels, some pressure feet have to retract upwards to clear locators, board retainers, etc. The retraction is started by a higher than normal Z stroke by the spindle. As the spindle moves upward an actuator plate 1 (Figs. 1 and 2) contacts a valve actuation pin 2 (Fig. 2). That motion pushes a miniature rubber sphere 6 until it contacts a seat 3. The air source is closed. The air inside the piston is exhausted out of the ball valve 13, which makes the piston retract upwards 8 with the help of springs.
