Graphical Pert-Gantt Charts

This disclosure provides graphical and direct manipulation techniques for definition and revision of pert and gantt-like charts as opposed to and in addition to conventional table-based methods for project planning charts.

An example of the use of graphic techniques for project planning is defining a milestone via a selection from an "attribute bar". Direct manipulation of graphical pert or gantt charts allows the user to "grab" the graphic lines and milestones. The user can "drag" the line or milestone to position it at another location with respect to time, e.g., to extend the duration of an event. As the object is moved, the tabular data is automatically updated to reflect the change. The user can interact with either the graphic or the data.

The technique provides benefits for the end user in terms of an easier to learn and remember approach to project planning techniques. Keystrokes are saved when users directly and graphically manipulate milestones and project charts to reflect changes in project dates. The techniques employed are consistent with how they are used in other applications.
