Graphical Page Layout

Provided is a technique for direct and visual page layout as opposed to menu-driven techniques.

The user is allowed to define the layout of document pages using graphical and direct manipulation techniques. The system displays a visual image of the current page layout when the user requests to change the format of the page. The page image contains the location of the header, body, and footer. Visual scales tell the user about the first and last typing lines for each area, together with right and left margin settings. Using the cursor or mouse pointer, the user can perform "grab and drag" operations on the object boundaries to change the settings. Alternatively, the user can use conventional menu techniques to set the values for the page areas.

The benefit to the user is reduced keystrokes to change page display attributes, reduced errors in changing the attributes, and improved usability. Improved transfer of learning across applications is achieved because the technique applies equally well to layout of different types of formatted objects, e.g., tables, charts, graphics, etc.
