Broadband Constant Continuity Switch

This article describes a broadband constant continuity switch that allows defective components to be removed from a network for servicing while the rest of the network remains in normal operation.

Local area network (LAN) cable plants pass AC and RF signals through passive components that distribute network signals to outlets (nodes). The components are of two piece design that pass AC signals through the lower housing, and RF signals through a removable electronic housing. Removal of plate breaks connection through the housing and pulse testing through electronics makes problem location difficult. The solution to these problems as disclosed herein utilizes a make before break magnetic reed relay switch.

The drawing shows a broadband LAN cable tap with a magnet and reed switch added. With this design echo test pulses may be used at install to locate bad cable or connections. Defective components may be removed for service while the rest of the network operates normally.
