Portable Light Barrier Safety Device

A technique is described whereby a portable light barrier safety device provides protection from dangerous mechanisms. The portability of the barrier device enables operators of mechanisms to position a detecting barrier in such a way so as to enable detection circuitry to remove power before injury or damage can occur.

The operation of the portable light barrier enables personnel to closely monitor the operation of mechanisms, such as robotic mechanisms within a work envelope. The portable light barrier can be placed between the robot and the operator, such that incorrect movement of the robot will interrupt a light beam, shutting down the system before injuring personnel, or the mechanism itself.

Operators and maintenance personnel will, typically, enter a work envelope area so as to perform temporary tasks, such as robotic "teach" modes of operation and to make required adjustments during the movement of a mechanism. To provide safety to the personnel and to avoid potentially hazardous conditions during the various tasks, the concept described herein enables personnel to position the light barrier device at critical locations. When a mechanism breaks the beam, power is removed.
