Use of Graphical Techniques On Menu Fields

The technique provides more visual interaction with menu fields to allow parameter format and length changes and overcome the deficiencies of conventional menu fields.

The approach allows displaying menu fields using conventional techniques. However, the menu fields will also display the default format of the field in a deemphasized manner. Direct manipulation techniques are allowed on the right and left borders of the field. The field size changes with direct manipulation of the border, and the format of the field is modified to accommodate the new field length. The new format is also displayed in a deemphasized manner, and any data in the field is automatically converted to the new format.

The benefits to the user are increased screen space due to elimination of format prompts, a simple direct manipulation technique to change field format, and a simple conversion mechanism. Fewer keystrokes are required for users to change parameter information.
