Abstract

The processing and formatting of tags embedded in a data stream are managed by a shell structure used to maintain the internal consistency of the data stream during creation and revision. The shell structure is customizable by the operator. Changes to a named construct in the shell apply to each occurrence of the corresponding tagged construct in the data stream. During creation or revision of the data stream, multiple instances of a tagged construct are created by the operator. If an instance of a tagged construct requires processing or formatting that is different from the specifications in the shell, the operator must be able to indicate the required changes in order to produce the desired results.

The processing and formatting of tags embedded in a data stream are managed by a shell structure used to maintain the internal consistency of the data stream during creation and revision. The shell structure is customizable by the operator. Changes to a named construct in the shell apply to each occurrence of the corresponding tagged construct in the data stream. During creation or revision of the data stream, multiple instances of a tagged construct are created by the operator. If an instance of a tagged construct requires processing or formatting that is different from the specifications in the shell, the operator must be able to indicate the required changes in order to produce the desired results.

A solution is to provide an option on the Tag Logical Element (TLE) structured field that allows operator keying of modifications to be applied to the processing and formatting information in the shell. The modifications are entered via a triplet parameter on the TLE and are applied to all data stream commands and controls occurring within the TLE structured field scope. Scope is determined by the hierarchy of the named constructs in the shell. Modifications include additions and deletions of content data, formatting directives and processing routines as well as overrides of default attribute values.
