Iconic Actions on Windows

Provided is a technique which allows moving a window to an iconic representation of an action to overcome the deficiencies of conventional implementations of actions upon the content of windows.

The technique utilizes conventional window grab and drag techniques for window movement. During movement, the window is replaced by a shadow box attached to the pointer. To effect execution of an action, the user performs a grab and drag on the window. The user moves the window shadow box and pointer to an action icon. The action icon highlights, and the user initiates the execution by releasing the window from the grab and drag operation.

The benefits to users are conceptual similarity of window and icon actions with icon-icon actions. Reduced keystrokes are required to execute the action on the content of the window compared to conventional techniques.
