Efficient Access of Indexed Data in a Database

Disclosed is a method of minimizing disk access when using an index to fetch records from a database.

Before beginning an indexed fetch operation, compare the requested fields with the definition of the index. If all the requested fields are part of the index key, return the values directly from the index, without reading the table. This is especially efficient when the request is qualified by a predicate and many records must be scanned before one is returned.
