Disclosed is a machine that can be used to remove and install soldered pin in hole type components. This machine uses IR energy to liquify the solder for removal and assembly of these pin in hole components.

The rework machine consists of two major parts. The first is a preheat chamber 1 which has the capability to preheat the board assembly to just below the solder melting point. The preheat chamber consists of both top and bottom IR reflector type elements arranged horizontally so that the board assembly when inserted in the chamber will rest between them. Controls are provided to regulate and maintain board assembly preheat temperature.

The second part is the rework stage 2. Here components are removed and replaced using another IR strip heater lamp. The rework stage is complex in that it can translate in an X Y motion to reach all points on an assembly; it can be fixtured with multiple sizes of rework lamp chimneys 2A to match different size components; it has a Z axis motion to allow the rework chimney to be positioned under and against the board assembly; and it has a vacuum solder removal attachment 2B which will remove any remaining solder after component removal.

Both preheat chamber and rework stage are tied together with a conveyor track to assist in rapidly transferring the board assembly from preheat to rework. Speed is important to reduce board assembly heat loss.
