Abstract

A new type of disk drive is proposed which can be used to replace the two separate Flexible Disk Drives that are installed in many systems. This disk drive will be capable of performing all reading and writing functions on two Flexible Magnetic Recording Disks without removing them from the disk drive. The device has two receiver mechanisms for loading the recording disks. The disk receivers are located one above the other as shown in Fig. 1.

A new type of disk drive is proposed which can be used to replace the two separate Flexible Disk Drives that are installed in many systems. This disk drive will be capable of performing all reading and writing functions on two Flexible Magnetic Recording Disks without removing them from the disk drive. The device has two receiver mechanisms for loading the recording disks. The disk receivers are located one above the other as shown in Fig. 1.

The disk drive is connected to the computer system with a single interface cable which contain signal lines to identify which drive(s) is active.

As shown in Fig. 2, the two drives utilize a single printed circuit board, stepper motor, head carriage, and for some disk types, a single spindle motor.
