Awaiting Page End Timeout Selection for an ASCII Printer

Disclosed is a printer feature which allows the operator to customize the delay time before being prompted for a form feed on a page printer for the unique operating environment of the printer.

Page printer technology is such that the printer does not start printing a page until a page end control is received or until a full page has been received which causes an implicit form feed. This causes the last page of a job without a page end control (form feed) to not be printed. The solution to this problem has been to prompt the operator to print the page using a form feed button, after a timeout period in which no data was received. Different applications and operating environments for printers make it impossible for the printer designer to select a timeout value suitable for all applications and operating environments. Thus, the printer feature disclosed is an operator panel control which allows the operator to vary the timeout value in seconds to match the operating environment. This timeout value is then used by the printer software to determine when to display the prompt for the operator to depress the form feed button.
