Iconic Selection of Input Mode

Provided is a technique to visually select the mode of input for mail functions to overcome the difficulties of current input modes.

Conventional mail functions provide text forms for performing such operations as replying or forwarding mail items. These functions are enhanced by a technique which uses the text form of input as the default user choice and provides an additional set of input selection choices, e.g., voice, image, etc. The optional input modes are presented to the user as a set of icons, where the current choice is shown as selected.

The benefits to the user are integration of many functional aspects of the system and a consistent manner for accessing many input devices to perform the same function. Selection of a given mode automatically configures the system for the mode, saves worksteps, and provides additional function and flexibility for the user to do work.
