Reference Windowing System

Provided is a technique for creating and interacting with windows providing reference information for other windows in order to overcome the difficulties of current window techniques.

The technique is applied when one window calls another window to perform operations related to the current user task but which may not require the information in the starting window. The window elements in the first window (now the reference window) are removed, the information in the window is "zoomed down", and the zoomed down information is placed in a corner of the new window (now a referencing window). The user can interact with the referencing window, as well as interact with the information in the reference window. Selections made in the referencing window can be used to update the reference window. If another window is called by a referencing window, the calling window is "referenced". The referencing technique is recursive. Any reference windows can be magnified or returned to. The visual effect achieved is of a "telescoping" set of windows.

The benefits to the user include reduced keystrokes for window management, increased screen space for showing information, and increased screen space for entry of information.
