Abstract

A general variable control (GVC) structured field is provided to define a variable construct that can be referenced by other constructs in a structured data stream to dynamically generate a data result either to be used in processing the data stream or to be inserted in a field in the data stream. Formatting of the generated variable data is controlled by the occurrence of a display style parameter triplet on the GVC. If the GVC causes a character string to be generated, the display style parameter specifies the character string type, such as arabic, alpha, roman, word numeric and the like. Processing characteristics of the variable data are defined by a general variable value and/or a general variable adjustment value parameter triplet on the GVC.

Variable Construct Group Descriptor

These parameters specify how to interpret the variable data result value, and the type of processing that is applicable for interim result values. When there is a plurality of variable construct definitions, requiring that formatting and processing descriptions be specified in each referenced variable construct definition results in unnecessary cluttering of the data stream, and does not permit sharing of these descriptions by multiple variable constructs within a variable construct pool resource group.

Data stream flexibility and transmission efficiency are improved when a General Variable Pool Descriptor (GVD) structured field is provided. If multiple variable constructs have commo...
