An automated "soft contact" technique for performing a height measurement above or below a datum surface is described.

The measurement sequence is as follows (see Fig. 1): probe tip 2 is positioned below the object surface to be measured 1. Pressure 6 is fed to the pneumatic displacement device 5 in incremental steps, resulting in the displacement of balance 3 and the raising of probe tip 2. A signal 7 from the load cell 4 is monitored by the micro processor to determine if probe tip 2 has made contact with object surface 1. If probe tip 2 has not made contact, then more pressure 6 is fed in. Once contact is made, the output signal 8 of the proximity probe 5 is read by the micro processor. Signal data 9 is run through an algorithm and the actual height is determined.
