Manual Wire Insulation Stripping Tool

Disclosed is an inexpensive manual tool that can thermally strip polyurethane insulation from small metal conductor wires. The exposed metal wire, of a controlled strip length, then lends itself to conventional solder joining at PC card and board components for EC/Repair actions.

In Fig. 1, the stripping tool is shown to consist of a phenolic holder that supports a formed heater ribbon that may be fabricated from a nichrome or equivalent metallurgy. By means of connections to a conventional power supply through flexible cables, the heater ribbon temperature can be regulated with Voltage-Time settings of the supply. In conjunction with the geometrical dimensions of the heater ribbon, the strip length of the insulation from the wire conductor can be accurately controlled on fine wires such as for the twisted pair illustrated in Fig. 1.
