Security Keybox for Workstation Keyboard

Many computer terminal and workstation units have a cable connected keyboard without which the unit will not perform data operations. The locking switch described in this article operates to disable the keyboard and thus to protect the data from unauthorized access.

In the schematic of the figure, the cables and the switch are shown enlarged. The switch 10 is housed in a small metal keybox 12 that is interposed serially between the cable 14 out of the keyboard 16 and "pigtail" cable 18 to the workstation unit 20.

To install the keybox 12, the keyboard cable 14 is disconnected from the pigtail cable 18. Screw-in connectors 22-24 are used at this junction. The keybox 12 is then installed between the two connectors 22-24. A clutch mechanism 26 is used that provides tightening only of engagement of the box 12 with the connector 24 on the pigtail cable 18. It cannot be removed once installed.

When the key 28 for the keybox 12 is turned to the OFF position, switch 10 in the box keybox 12 is closed, whereby the clock line 30 in the keyboard cable 14 is grounded, totally disabling the keyboard 16 from any further keystroking. When the key 28 is turned to the ON position, switch 10 is opened and the clock line 30 is allowed to operate and normal operations are restored.

To secure the system, the operator turns the key 28 to the OFF position, and removes the key. Although the keyboard can be disconnected at 22 and another installed,...
