Machine Cover Safety Devices

Disclosed are safety devices, for removable vertical and pivoting top machine covers, which prevent accidental falling during service or maintenance.

Figure 1 shows that vertical cover 1 is provided with notched members 2 which rest on studs 3 affixed to machine frame 4 (one on each side). In process of removal, cover 1 is supported by and pivots forward on studs 3. Pivoting is limited to maximum angle 5 by the cover meeting the frame at point 6. It is apparent that the cover must be intentionally lifted up off of pins 3 to be removed, and that it cannot accidentally fall forward or downward.

Figure 2 shows a machine, provided with interposer 7 which is affixed to machine frame 4 by pivot 8. Interposer 7 is designed with one end heavier than the other so that when top cover 9 is raised, interposer 7 automatically rotates to a vertical position, as shown. If cover 9 is accidentally released, the interposer supports it, preventing possible hand or finger injury at pinch point 10. It is apparent that to close the top cover, the interposer must be manually held in its operated position while the front cover 1 is open.
