Improved Slider Geometry to Enhance Writeability Field

A thin film magnetic head designed to perform both the read and write functions provides improved writeability without increasing the pole tip dimensions.

The magnetic head has a first permalloy layer 1 having a thinner section 2 extending from a shaping edge 3 to the pole tip 4. A second permalloy layer 5 is produced which has a shaping edge 6 and a thinner section 7 extending from the edge 6 to the pole tips 4. Placing the shaping edges 3, 6 nearer to the pole tips 4 decreases the total magnetic flux carried in their cross sections, and hence lowers the flux density there. The head will then support a larger drive current through coil 8 before the saturation flux density is reached in the shaping edges, thereby producing a larger gap field before saturating.

This design improves the writeability of the head without increasing the pole tip dimensions.
