Improved Perpendicular Recording Head

Disclosed is a modification to a conventional ring or single-sided probe head in such a manner as to provide improved vertical field derivative and therby improved high density recording on dual-layer perpendicular recording media.

The head is modified to allow recording to occur beneath the gap rather than at the trailing edge of the structure. The modification involves reduction of the gap dimension relative to the distance to the permeable underlayer of the media so as to increase the vertical field derivative beneath the gap. At the same time, it is essential to reduce the field magnitude, and its derivative, beneath the trailing edge of the head. This is accomplished by means of an asymmetric pole structure in which the trailing pole is much longer and/or much wider than the leading pole. The resulting field profile, in combination with appropriate media coercivity and switching-field-distribution, leads to reduced recorded transition length and higher recording densities. In the preferred embodiment of this disclosure, the leading pole is made of preferred embodiment of this disclosure, the leading pole is made of permalloy or other high permeability material, and the trailing, large return pole can be made out of ferrite or high permeability deposited material such as permalloy.
