Direct Manipulation of Icons in a Sort List

Provided is a technique for users to change the display-sort order of icon lists which control presentation of information on screens to overcome the difficulties of current order-manipulation techniques.

Users are provided with the capability of displaying icons in lists within command bars and on window panels. In addition, users are provided with the capability of icon-driven sort lists which control the order, content, and position of information displayed in a window. For example, the sort list is defined as a collection of icons, where the content and order of the icon sort list controls the information displayed in the window. If the user changes the content or order of the icons in the sort list, then the content or order of the window changes automatically to reflect the icons sort list.

The benefits to the user include new function, improved ease of use in allowing the user to modify window information appearance, and an easy to learn technique.
