Abstract

Management of tags embedded in a data stream is provided by a shell structure. Formatting directives and routines for processing the data stream within the scope of an embedded tag are specified in the shell. In order to facilitate processing, a method permitting efficient access to formatting and procedural information is required. To satisfy this requirement, a function permitting direct referencing of constructs and associated information in a shell structure is provided.

Naming Constructs in a Shell Structure

Management of tags embedded in a data stream is provided by a shell structure. Formatting directives and routines for processing the data stream within the scope of an embedded tag are specified in the shell. In order to facilitate processing, a method permitting efficient access to formatting and procedural information is required. To satisfy this requirement, a function permitting direct referencing of constructs and associated information in a shell structure is provided.

Referencing of constructs in a shell is permitted by a name qualification function. This function can be used to indicate a reference to a shell construct as well as the name of the construct, and is accessed to retrieve formatting and processing information for a specific embedded tag. Implementation of the name qualification function is via a Fully Qualified Name (FQN) triplet which can be used to either name or reference a construct in the shell. To name a construct in a shell, a Fully Qualified Name (FQN) triplet of type X'A3', Begin Tag Name, or X'A2', End Tag Name, is included as a parameter on the name construct structured field. To reference a named construct in a shell, either the Begin or End Tag Name FQN triplet type is included on the tag element structured field.

By providing a name qualification function, an improvement in flexibility, efficiency and useability is achieved in management of a data stream by a shell structure.
