Abstract

Management of tags embedded in a data stream is provided by a shell structure resource. Formatting directives and routines for processing the data stream are specified in the shell. Sometimes, multiple shell structures, including shells redefined by applying modifications specified by a second shell structure or by a shell structure fragment, are required to be accessed by the data stream process. The default shell structure, as well as any redefined shell structure, are identified by a structured field that maps the name of the shell structure to a coded identifier. To satisfy the requirement that resources be activated before being accessed necessitates that both identification and activation of a shell structure controls be included in the data stream.

Implicit Activation of a Shell Structure

A more efficient means of activation would be a function that identifies a shell structure, and by identifying the shell causes implicit activation to occur. This function is provided by a Map Resource (MDR) structured field that maps the name of a shell structure to a coded identifier. The default is the shell name mapped to an identifier with a value of X'00'. The occurrence of the MDR control in the data stream effects the activation of each shell structure whose name is mapped to an identifier. If the MDR identifies a shell or shell fragment structure containing modifications to another shell structure, then the instance of the MDR structured field in the data stream...
