Abstract

A method is described for providing each document in an electronic folder with its own access criteria. Paper folders may contain numerous papers within the folder; however, anyone with access to a folder can look at any paper in the folder. This is a security problem that can be overcome electronically in a database environment.

Assigning Access to Documents in a Folder of a Host Library

A method is described for providing each document in an electronic folder with its own access criteria. Paper folders may contain numerous papers within the folder; however, anyone with access to a folder can look at any paper in the folder. This is a security problem that can be overcome electronically in a database environment.

The solution to this problem is to allow the creator of each document to set the access criterion based on security requirements for that particular document. The ability to group documents owned by others into a folder is determined by a separate access criteria. The owner can enter a document into a folder if the owner has access to the document. User specified access criteria is kept by document, not by folder grouping. When a user accesses the library, the system automatically restricts all operations based on the user's access to documents.

The advantage to this approach is that the accessibility of data base base information is provided with the most flexible level of granularity, while maintaining the maximum amount of security.
