Method to Report Status for Distributed Folder Documents

A method is described to report for individual status for document within a folder or for a folder document that were previously distributed in a network.

A folder is a logical organization of documents which can be linear and/or hierarchical in order.

The new method provides a protocol for an application to permit folder status to be reported back for distributions with confirmation or for distribution errors. Each reported status retains the logical organization structure of the document the status is being reported for. That is, the status can interpreted like a folder. This is done by providing a relational object within each status. The relation object specifies whether a status being reported for a document is within a folder or a folder or folder only.

The status reporting scheme can be illustrated with following example. A Folder-A contains Folder-B and Document-A. The Folder-B contains Document-A and Document-B. Note that Document-A is contained in both Folder-A and Folder-B. This logical organization of documents is distributed. The receiving node, due to system error, is unable to handle Folder-B. The new method allows a status to be reported stating that Folder-B contained within Folder-A had caused a system error. Using this illustration, one can see that each individual relation of a distributed folder can be reported using the new method.
