Method to Uniquely Identifly a Document Within a Multiple Document Distribution

A method is described which permits identification of a document within a multiple document distribution uniquely.

The unique identification is used in several ways. First, it is used to specify the logical organization of documents within a distribution. This collection of documents can express a folder and/or a staple organization. Second, the identification is used to individually assign and handle reply attributes like confirmation. Third, it is also used to specify individual mail handling characteristics like personal mail. Fourth, each document is controlled, accessed, and managed by the application for the user by the unique identifier. Finally, the identification is used to correlate and cross reference documents that were distributed previously.

The fully qualified document identifier within a distribution consists of the following: (1) user identity - source or sender of the distribution

(2) date/time of distribution - submission date and time stamp

(3) sequence number - incremented after each distribution

(4) distribution document number - unique for each document within a distribution which is a number serially as signed for every document in the distribution.
