Abstract

Stapled documents, consisting of two or more documents, are linear, logical organization of documents. A method is described to permit stapled documents to maintain a certain level of incoming mail characteristics when they are received as mail. Even though a single mail item contains multiple documents, the user would like to maintain individual document characteristics (like new, unopen, and opened) when handled in a recipient's in-basket.

New/Old/Unopen/Open Attributes for Stapled Documents

Stapled documents, consisting of two or more documents, are linear, logical organization of documents. A method is described to permit stapled documents to maintain a certain level of incoming mail characteristics when they are received as mail. Even though a single mail item contains multiple documents, the user would like to maintain individual document characteristics (like new, unopen, and opened) when handled in a recipient's in-basket.

An in-basket is a repository where a recipient keeps all incoming mail. The in-basket is accessible not only to the recipient but also to all users that can work on behalf of the recipient. When an in-basket item is initially accessed by either the recipient or any on behalf users, the item is marked 'unopen' and is no longer 'new'. When the item is finally acted upon or processed (like view, print, file, etc.), the item is marked 'opened'.

When stapled documents are delivered as mail, the new method provides a protocol for an application to permit stapled documents with the highest (top) level in the linear organization of documents to be accessed as the initial entry in the in- basket. As each in-basket item is accessed and processed, the highest level document is treated like any other in-basket entries. That staple document will change its attributes from 'new' to 'unopen' to 'open' accordingly. However, the lower level staple documents will remain 'new'.
