Serial Link Checking Function

Disclosed is function that allows a bidirectional serial link to transmit data with or without checking the incoming link status.

When a serial link is attached to a processor that operates much slower than the link, the hardware must check to see if transmission is acceptable based on the incoming link status. This check normally operates based on the type of information block ("frame") being sent. Frames that do not cause a connection are sent without checking for a good incoming link.

When the serial link is transmitting other types of information, this check is no longer valid since there is no frame. A programmable bit is provided to tell the hardware to check the link or not before transmission. This bit also provides the ability to change the normal frame transmission check for diagnostic, etc., purposes.
