Abstract

This invention relates to a method for generating floating point (FP) instructions on a runtime available on one of a set of dissimilar coprocessors. The method steps comprise: (a) at compile time, mapping each FP instruction occurrence into a counterpart procedure call and indicia of operators, operands, and register availability, and (b) at runtime, selecting an available coprocessor, generating a specific instruction sequence as a function of the operator, operands, and available registers and the selected coprocessor, and returning control to the start of the generated sequence.

The indicia (generic instruction) passed includes a data part and a text part. The data part contains the procedure call, operator, and operands. The text part is a Branch and Link type instruction that transfers control to the data part.
