Abstract

Disclosed is a method to retrieve a document with or without all of the documents attached to it. The staple relationship logically ties two otherwise discrete, independently defined documents together. This relationship is a one-to-one relation where the attaching document can be referred to as the "stapler" and the receiving document can be referred to as the "staplee". A particular "staplee" document may be stapled by many other "stapler" documents at the same time. When an authorized user wishes to retrieve a document, the user must make a decision. In some cases, the user will want to retrieve a document by itself. In other cases, the user will want to retrieve a document with all of the documents stapled to it.

Retrieve a Document with or without all of the Documents Stapled to it

Disclosed is a method to retrieve a document with or without all of the documents attached to it. The staple relationship logically ties two otherwise discrete, independently defined documents together. This relationship is a one- to-one relation where the attaching document can be referred to as the "stapler" and the receiving document can be referred to as the "staplee".

The method described in this disclosure enables a user to retrieve a "staplee" document with or without retrieving all of the logically-attached "stapler" documents that the user is authorized to retrieve. This method consists of adding a "stapler-option" or its logical equivalent to the retrieve-request library- server protocol. The library-server processes the retrieve request as follows:

IF the "stapler-option" is set to retrieve all associated

"staplers"

THEN

Access the list of "staplers" attached to the "staplee"

FOR each "stapler" DO

IF the user has the proper authority to retrieve this

"stapler" THEN retrieve the "stapler"

END IF

END FOR

END IF
Retrieve the "staplee"
