Abstract

Disclosed is a method to search for documents based on whether or not they are stapled by other documents. The staple relationship logically ties two otherwise discrete, independently defined documents together. This relationship is a one-to-one relation where the attaching document can be referred to as the "stapler" and the receiving document can be referred to as the "staplee". A user may wish to know which documents in the library have other documents stapled to them. Conversely, a user may wish to know which documents in the library do not have other documents stapled to them.

Search for Documents that Either are or are Not Stapled by Another Document

Disclosed is a method to search for documents based on whether or not they are stapled by other documents. The staple relationship logically ties two otherwise discrete, independently defined documents together. This relationship is a one-to-one relation where the attaching document can be referred to as the "stapler" and the receiving document can be referred to as the "staplee". A user may wish to know which documents in the library have other documents stapled to them. Conversely, a user may wish to know which documents in the library do not have other documents stapled to them.

The method described in this disclosure enables a user to search for "staplee" or "non-staplee" documents by adding the following criterion to the search: the target document is a staplee document attached by another document. The library- server maintains a "staplee" attribute or its logical equivalent for each document. The library-server processes the search as follows:

Apply first selection criteria, if any

FOR each document passing the first selection phase DO IF the document is a "staplee" and

the user has the proper authority to access this "staplee" THEN

pass this "staplee" document for the next selection phase

END IF

END FOR
Apply subsequent selection criteria, if any Enter each selected document into the final search-result-list

The advantage of this method is to provide the user with a simple option...
