Functional Icon Pointers

Provided is a technique which uses icons attached to pointers for performing function interactively and automatically in order to overcome deficiencies in current systems.

The user is provided with conventional pointer and icon support. The capability is enhanced by allowing user selection of an icon which is subsequently attached to the pointer. The user can move the icon to objects to perform functions which are of a cumulative nature, e.g., attaching a "sum" icon to a pointer which the user can move to numbers for user-controlled selection and automatic system addition; the results are displayed dynamically in the icon. Similarly, a chart icon can be used to select, accumulate, and interactively process and display the data chart. The technique of selection and dynamic processing/display of actual results has very broad applicability, including user- defined tasks.

The benefits to the user include new function, easy to learn and conceptually simple, reduced keystrokes for many functions, enhanced productivity and usability, and a technique which has a high correspondence to certain physical user tasks.
