Matrix Blind Hole Drill Depth Set-Up Fixture

This article describes a fixture that is used in a matrix spindle configuration drill machine that sets the depth of all blind hole drills actuated only by a machine cycle.

To initiate a set up for blind hole drills, the following procedure is used:

The drills (1) would be pushed into the spindle with a placement tool that would place it approximately .05" short of its final position. The plate fixture (2) is loaded into an X-Y Table and positioned accurately from spindle to fixture button
(3).

A machine drill cycle begins. The anvil is hydraulically driven upwards. The elastomeric anvil button (4) contacts the fixture button (3) and pushes it upwards until it contacts the vacuum pressure foot (7) and stops. Any Z axis variance is removed by overdriving the anvil button by the spring characteristics in the anvil button.

The spindle is actuated downwards. The shoulder of the drill (1) contacts the topmost shoulder of the fixture button which allows the centrifugal clutches (5) surfaces to slip on the O.D. of the drill. As the downward motion ceases, centrifugal clutches hold the drill stationary in the spindle shaft with the help of the clutch springs (6) as the spindle retracts upwards. There is no relative motion between the drill and the spindle shaft, therefore, the drill will be set relative to the anvil button and the accurate depth can be maintained without individually setting each drill.
