Disclosed is a technique for measuring the saturation level of a liquid in a porous medium.

Two ultrasonic transducers (see figure) are mounted on either side of the porous medium, and are forced against it with a controlled preload. One transducer functions as a transmitter and the other as a receiver. The acoustical coupling between the transmitter and receiver is directly dependent on the liquid saturation level in the porous medium--being essentially zero for the dry case, and increasing as the saturation level increases. As the coupling increases, the output of the receiver also increases giving a measure of the saturation level.
