Product And Component Shipping System

The Product and Component Shipping (PCS) system is an online IMS application which controls and facilitates the shipment of hardware. This disclosure deals with a component of PCS known as "Interface Definitions".

PCS Interface Definitions allow an authorized programmer or customer to dynamically define what, when and how interface data will be created for other application systems.

Typically the logic for creating interface data or transactions is hard-coded in information system applications.

The PCS Interface Definitions module uses "rules" coded in the Interface Definitions database to determine: 1. When to create the interface data. As each order or case reaches a new stage in the shipment process, the Interface Definitions data base is read to determine what interfaces should be created for the order or case. The Interface Definition also considers the type of order or cases (i.e., foreign trade, domestic group, etc.). 2. What interface data to create
(i.e., what type of data for what application). 3. How the interface data is to be created. The Interface Definition indicates whether or not an online transaction is to be created, and if so, the transaction's ID.

The PCS Interface Definitions can be displayed and updated online via a tailored PCS panel. Access to this panel is controlled by the PCS Security Administrator.

The Interface Definition design provides the following advantages:
