Balanced and Coupled Dual Voice Coil Motor Design

Disclosed is a type of voice coil motor (VCM) design which generates pure torque for smooth operation of rotary machinery. The coil inductance is also minimized which results in faster current change without using a shorted turn.

The novel VCM design is as shown in the figure driving a rotary actuator
(3)(4)(a V-shaped actuator arm) in a magnetic disk drive. Two identical coils
(14)(15) are located at opposite sides of the pivot (9). They are connected in series in such a way that they are energized with the same amount of current in the same direction. Two pairs of magnets (12)(13) are arranged to generate magnetic field in opposite directions, one toward the center iron pole (10) and one away from it. Therefore, the two coils generate the same amount of force in opposite directions, which results in a pure torque about the pivot (9). The two coils are arranged end-to-end on the common center iron pole (10) so that the effect of the magnetic fields generated by them cancel each other, and result in minimal inductance for the combined coils.
